Nature has gifted us with a vast array of resources, and among them, Mimosa Hostilis stands out as a remarkable plant with versatile properties. Beyond its cultural and medicinal significance, Mimosa Hostilis root bark has long been utilized as a natural dye, bringing vibrant colors to textiles and artistic creations. In this blog, we explore the fascinating world of Mimosa Hostilis as a dye and the captivating hues it imparts.
Historical Roots of Natural Dyes:
The art of dyeing with natural substances spans thousands of years, deeply rooted in human history and culture. Before the advent of synthetic dyes, plants, minerals, and even certain insects were used to obtain colors for fabrics and decorative purposes. Mimosa Hostilis root bark has been treasured by indigenous communities in South America for its dyeing properties for centuries.
The Magic of Mimosa Hostilis Root Bark:
The rich, dark brown root bark of the Mimosa Hostilis tree contains pigments that create a stunning range of colors when extracted. The bark's high tannin content plays a crucial role in dye production, as tannins have an affinity for binding to fibers, making the dye more durable and long-lasting.
Extraction and Preparation:
To obtain the dye from Mimosa Hostilis root bark, a process of extraction and preparation is necessary. The bark is typically harvested and ground into a fine powder. This powder is then combined with water or other suitable solvents to create a dye bath. Through a series of soaking, boiling, and simmering, the color from the bark is released and absorbed by the fibers.
Vibrant Hues:
Mimosa Hostilis root bark dye yields an exquisite range of colors, ranging from warm earth tones to deep shades of purples and blues. Depending on the fabric type, mordants (substances that help fix the dye to the fibers) can be used to modify and enhance the color palette. The resulting hues possess a natural and unique quality, adding character and depth to textiles.
Sustainable and Eco-Friendly:
One of the significant advantages of using Mimosa Hostilis root bark as a dye is its eco-friendliness. Unlike synthetic dyes that often contain harmful chemicals and pollutants, natural dyes are biodegradable and do not contribute to environmental pollution. Additionally, sourcing dye materials from sustainable and ethically harvested Mimosa Hostilis root bark ensures a responsible approach to dye production.
Exploring Creative Possibilities:
Mimosa Hostilis dye offers an exciting playground for artistic expression. From textiles to paper, yarn, and even natural cosmetics, the dye can be applied to various mediums, allowing artists and craftsmen to create unique and captivating pieces. Its versatility and ability to interplay with different fibers and materials make it a favored choice for those seeking a connection to nature in their creations.
Mimosa Hostilis root bark, with its innate dyeing properties, allows us to tap into nature's palette and bring forth vibrant colors. Its historical significance, eco-friendly nature, and the artistic possibilities it offers make it a remarkable resource for those seeking a connection to traditional dyeing techniques and a sustainable approach to creativity. By embracing Mimosa Hostilis as a natural dye, we honor the beauty of the plant world while creating something truly extraordinary.

Mimosa Tenuiflora also know as Jurema, Tepezcohuite and Mimosa Hostilis is a perennial tree native to South America, Central America and Mexico.

Mimosa bark contains large amounts (16%) of tannins, which act as an astringent, making the skin stop bleeding.
The other healing mechanisms of this plant have not yet been fully researched but it is considered to be an antiseptic, analgesic and promoter of cellular regeneration. Dermatology helping to prevent wrinkles and acne, as well as releive psoriasis, herpes and chicken pox scars.
In addition to the above effects, Tepezcohuite may protect and stimulate the generation of collagen and elasticity.
It was most famously used to treat the burns of upto 5000 people after the tragic explosion of a gas plant in mexico.
Mimosas popularity in soaps and lotions is increasing as more people hear about this amazing product, but it is still very rare in Europe. Making it a great option for people wanting to make unique soaps for themselves, to sell or as gifts.
Our Mimosa Hostilis inner rootbark is sourced from a sustainable farm in South America,
Free from pesticides and chemicals.
The roots are carefully collected without killing the tree, then the bark is removed and the inner bark seperated,
We beleive this to be the most effective part of the plant for skin healing.
The inner root bark is dried at a low temperature to ensure there is no degredation and the product you receive is as full of goodness as if it had come straight off of the tree.
The left over roots and plant material from this process are recycled into wood compost for use in reforestation projects in South America.

What Can Be Used as Natural Dyes?
~Natural Fabric Dyeing Guide with Tannin-Rich Ingredients~
Natural dyeing is a centuries-old technique that utilizes plant-based materials, often rich in tannins, to color fabrics. Tannin-rich ingredients like Mimosa, madder root, spirulina, turmeric, and indigofera are renowned for their ability to impart vivid and consistent colors to textiles. Here's a comprehensive guide to the art of natural fabric dyeing.
**Suitable Fabrics for Natural Dyeing:**
- Natural fibers such as cotton, linen, silk, and wool are ideal for absorbing and retaining natural dyes.
- Fabrics with a higher cellulose content, like cotton and linen, tend to respond exceptionally well to tannin-based dyes.
**Benefits of Natural Dyeing:**
1. **Environmentally Friendly:** Natural dyeing employs renewable plant materials and is more eco-friendly compared to synthetic dyeing, which often involves harmful chemicals.
2. **Unique and Variable Results:** Natural dyes can yield unique color variations due to factors like plant source, mordants, and dyeing techniques, making each dyed piece one-of-a-kind.
3. **Safe and Non-Toxic:** Natural dyes are generally safe and non-toxic, making them suitable for textiles that come into direct contact with the skin.
**Step-by-Step Instructions for Natural Fabric Dyeing:**
**1. Preparing Your Fabric:**
- Wash your fabric thoroughly to remove any dirt, oils, or finishes that may interfere with dye absorption.
- If necessary, mordant your fabric. Mordants are substances that help fix the dye to the fabric. Alum and iron are common mordants for natural dyeing.
**2. Preparing the Dye Bath:**
- Select your tannin-rich natural dye source (e.g., Mimosa, madder root, spirulina, turmeric, or indigofera).
- Extract the dye by boiling or steeping the dye source in hot water. The ratio of dye material to water will depend on the specific source and desired intensity of color.
- Strain the dye liquid to remove any solid particles.
**3. Dyeing the Fabric:**
- Immerse your pre-mordanted fabric into the dye bath. Ensure that the fabric is fully submerged.
- Heat the dye bath gently and maintain a simmer (do not boil) for an extended period (hours or even days, depending on the desired color depth).
- Stir the fabric occasionally for even color distribution.
**4. Rinse and Finish:**
- Remove the fabric from the dye bath when the desired color is achieved.
- Rinse the fabric thoroughly with cold water until the water runs clear.
- Allow the fabric to air dry.
**5. Post-Dye Treatment:**
- Some natural dyes may require post-dye treatments to enhance colorfastness. This can include washing the dyed fabric with mild detergent or vinegar.
Natural fabric dyeing is a fascinating and sustainable way to add character and color to textiles. Experiment with various tannin-rich ingredients to create unique hues and patterns on your fabrics while embracing the eco-friendly benefits of natural dyeing.

How to Get Started Dyeing
Step 1: PreparI the Dye
. Add twice as much water as ingredients. So if you put in two cups of plant material, add four cups of water.
Bring to a boil, and then simmer for one hour. Strain off the hard materials and keep the “dye.”
Keep in mind that the longer you let the materials sit in the water, the stronger your dye is going to be. If you have the time, you can even let it soak overnight (without heat) to get a really concentrated solution.
Step 2: Prepare the Fixative
Once you’ve picked out what you want to dye and you’ve got your dye all ready to go, you have to prepare a fixative for your fabric. This will “fix” the dye into the fibers so it won’t wash out.
If you’re using berries to dye your fabric, you have to use a salt fixative. Put 1/2 cup salt in 8 cups of water. Put your fabric in here and boil for one hour.
If you’re using plants to dye your fabric, you have to use a vinegar fixative. Combine one part vinegar and four parts water, and boil the fabric in the mixture for one hour.
When your fabric is done, rinse it out under cold water.
Step 3: Dye the Fabric
All you do now is place your wet fabric into the dye bath and simmer until the fabric has reached the color and shade you want. Remember, the color is going to be a bit lighter once the fabric dries out.
Then wash the fabric separately.
•Making Mimosa Hostilis Soap?
**Creating Mimosa Hostilis Soap for Skin Benefits**
Mimosa hostilis, also known as Jurema, is believed to offer various skin-related benefits. Making soap infused with Mimosa hostilis can be a rewarding way to harness these potential advantages. Below is a comprehensive guide to crafting Mimosa hostilis soap for skin benefits.
**Materials Needed:**
- 1 pound (450g) melt-and-pour soap base (unscented)
- 2 tablespoons of finely powdered Mimosa hostilis root bark
- 2 tablespoons of Mimosa hostilis-infused oil (see instructions below)
- 10-15 drops of skin-friendly essential oil (e.g., lavender, chamomile, or tea tree)
- Soap molds
- Microwave-safe bowl
- Spoon
- Measuring cups
**Step-by-Step Instructions:**
**1. Prepare the Mimosa Hostilis-Infused Oil:**
- Grind 2 tablespoons of dried Mimosa hostilis root bark into a fine powder.
- Combine the root bark powder with 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil (e.g., olive oil, coconut oil) in a glass jar.
- Seal the jar and store it in a cool, dark place for at least two weeks. This allows the oil to extract the beneficial properties of the Mimosa hostilis root bark.
**2. Cut and Melt the Soap Base:**
- Cut the melt-and-pour soap base into small cubes for even melting.
- Place the soap cubes in a microwave-safe bowl.
**3. Melt the Soap Base:**
- Microwave the soap base in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval, until it is completely melted. Avoid overheating.
**4. Incorporate the Mimosa Hostilis Ingredients:**
- Add 2 tablespoons of finely powdered Mimosa hostilis root bark to the melted soap base.
- Stir in 2 tablespoons of the Mimosa hostilis-infused oil you prepared earlier. This will infuse your soap with the skin-friendly properties of Mimosa hostilis.
**5. Add Essential Oil:**
- For added skin benefits and fragrance, incorporate 10-15 drops of your chosen skin-friendly essential oil into the soap mixture. Essential oils like lavender, chamomile, or tea tree are suitable choices.
**6. Pour into Soap Molds:**
- Pour the Mimosa hostilis-infused soap mixture into your selected soap molds. You can use various shapes and sizes based on your preference.
**7. Allow to Cool and Set:**
- Let the soap molds sit undisturbed for approximately 1-2 hours or until the soap has fully cooled and solidified.
**8. Unmold and Store:**
- Once the soap has set, gently remove it from the molds.
- Store your Mimosa hostilis soap in a cool, dry place, ensuring it fully air-dries before use.
**9. Enjoy Your Skin-Benefiting Mimosa Hostilis Soap:**
- Your homemade Mimosa hostilis soap is ready for use! Experience the potential skin-nourishing properties and the pleasing aroma of this natural creation.
Mimosa hostilis soap may offer skin-soothing and conditioning benefits. However, it's essential to perform a patch test before regular use to ensure compatibility with your skin. Additionally, source Mimosa hostilis responsibly and ethically, considering its conservation status in some regions.
6. Mix the Calendula and Mimosa hostilis powders together, gradually mixing in the Titanium dioxide, which functions to lighten the colour of the finished soap.
7. Once both mixtures are cooled to within a few degrees of each other (between 38°C – 43°C), slowly add the first mix (caustic soda, etc.) to the second (oils, etc.), stirring gently but firmly by hand while you do so.
8. The soap mix will quickly trace (begin to emulsify – dip a spoon in and then dribble a bit of it back in, if there’s a trace of the soap left on the spoon…). When it does so, quickly stir in the remaining ingredients, mix it all up thoroughly and pour it out into molds.
9. Lightly insulate the resulting soap with a clean tea towel or similar, then leave it alone somewhere cool and dry for at least two days to harden.
10. Once the soap has hardened, remove it from the molds and cut to finish as desired.
11. Cure the soap somewhere dry and warm for a minimum of one month..
Congratulations, you’ve learnt how to make Mimosa Hostilis soap!!!
